Official Launch Information
Marshall School is thrilled to officially launch its 1:1 Laptop Program in the Upper School starting August 2013. The program will follow an increasingly common format called Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), in which students are expected to bring their own equipment to school daily, in the same way they would bring a notebook or calculator.
The program will launch for all upper school students starting in the 2013-2014 school year, but the technology requirements will differ by grade level.
Marshall will continue to provide school-owned Apple devices for middle school students.
Students will be required to purchase/bring a new laptop computer. A Macbook running Mountain Lion is recommended, but a new PC running Windows 7 or 8 is also acceptable. It is expected that this new machine should last students for their time in the Marshall Upper School.
Juniors and Seniors must bring a laptop that has the following minimal requirements: Windows XP, WiFi Connectivity, and Microsoft Office Student edition.
Most work on the laptops will take place in the “cloud,” but due to the cross-platform approach, the student version of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) is required. A complete list of required and non-required programs is found here.
Purchase and Maintenance
Upper school students and their families will be responsible for purchasing and maintaining the laptops. The school recommends families purchase a three-year warranty. Since laptops are required, the expense can be included in the overall cost of a Marshall education that is used in determining regular financial aid awards.
