Marlene M. David Endowment Fund Established at Marshall School |

Marshall trustees, past and present, along with friends, parents and alumni have come together to honor Marlene David for her decade of service as Head of School.
Together they have contributed more than $66,000 to establish the Marlene M. David Fund for Marshall Faculty. This endowed fund will not only provide support for the advancement of compensation levels in keeping with Marshall’s strategic planning goals, but will provide funding for periodic special awards to faculty of special merit.
Marlene David, who has led the school since 1997, retires at the end of June. During Marlene’s tenure, the school changed from a “building” to a “campus” that includes a renovated science wing, a renovated theater and performing arts center, a hockey rink, a new soccer complex, and a renovated football stadium. Co-curricular activities, including athletics, band orchestra, choir, math league, dance and debate teams, became centers of excellence admired throughout the region and state. Enrollment has increased, and an atmosphere of financial stability has descended on the school.
Ms. David’s leadership has also extended to the community through personal involvement with Northern Pines Girl Scouts, United Way of Greater Duluth, the Boys and Girls Club of Duluth, the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, Memorial Blood Center and the Duluth Public Library Foundation.
The Marlene M. David Fund for Marshall Faculty is a fitting tribute for her tireless advocacy for the Marshall faculty and devotion to the concept that faculty compensation must be supported and advanced in a way that will allow the school to build a teaching staff that is recognized on a regional and even national level.
For information about the fund or to contribute, contact Marshall School’s Development Office, 1215 Rice Lake Rd., Duluth, MN 55811 (218-727-7266 ext 112) or email jgustafson@marshallschool.org. |

Founder's Day Opens Renovated Fregeau Auditorium
|
Hilltopper students celebrated "Founder's Day" on Monday. This recent tradition helps us to remember that the Hilltopper community has been in existence for over 100 years. Founder's Day reminds us that, while we are here, it is our job to take care of the gift we have in a Hilltopper program and campus, and to make certain that future generations of Hilltoppers will enjoy the same things we have.
This year, the Founder's Day Assembly marked the first use of the newly renovated Fregeau Auditorium. Marlene David spoke about the history of the Fregeau family and their contributions to the original construction of the theater. Chico Anderson asked in a blessing that the space "continue to be a lively center of learning , a home for dramatic and musical discoveries, a place where our spirits soar, we tap our toes,we weep and laugh in response to artistic presentations, all the time glorifying God with our many talents and gifts."
Sarah Perry-Spears and Christa Knudsen, both alumni and currently key administrators at Marshall, spoke about the their Hilltopper education made in their successes at college and in their professional development. Finally, the Marshall Band, Choir, and Strings finished the assembly with a performance of
the school's alma mater, "Illuminare."

| "Wonder and Awe" for Graduating Seniors |
June 11th marked the the 101st consecutive year Hilltopper students have participated in commencement exercises. Speakers included Class Valedictorian Drew Nelson and Fred Sproat who was elected to deliver the second student address by his classmates. Head of School Marlene David, as is the school tradition, addressed the graduates just prior to the awarding of diplomas. Marty Halvorson was presented the Hilltopper Award by the faculty as the student who best represented the character, spirit, and integrity described in the mission of the school.
Fred Sproat's speech reminded classmates of the various adventures and experiences that have made the class of 2006 what it is. He described this final year as: " the final book in an eight part series...we collectively reach the final sentence, concluding with a period that effectively is, each of us receiving a diploma. It's an end to what has become my best year at Marshall." Drew Nelson's address reflected on how his perspective has both changed and stayed the same at three points in his life as a Hilltopper - as a small boy of 10 beginning 5th grade, as a rising 8th grader, and as a young man about to graduate. He concluded with these words: "I wish my grandpa's wish. I wish you the best, wonder and awe throughout your life. You have so many dreams. Know that they are safe and be brave. Let your new world begin."
Marlene David's remarks used the newly renovated Mosaic in the Fregeau Lobby as a metaphor for community, noting that "mosaics remind us how the small tile that represents each of us fits in to a much greater expanse. On small piece of glass is important for its sheen, its deep color, and it unique shape, just as each of you, seniors, is unique. But put together many of those tiles and there is fluidity and larger meaning." She hoped that the graduates would "come back soon and come back often, but for now, god-speed."
You can view a photo set from the day here. A copy of Marlene David's remarks at the Eighth Grade Moving-Up Ceremony is available here.
